4 Million Individuals Impacted in Nationwide Data Breach
Hackers Compromise VeriSource Network in Sophisticated Cyber Attack
On April 24, 2025, VeriSource Services, Inc. (VSI) disclosed a major data breach that compromised sensitive personal information of 4 million individuals, including employees and dependents of companies that rely on VeriSource for administrative services.
VeriSource first detected suspicious network activity on February 28, 2024, and immediately shut down unauthorized access while launching an investigation. Cybersecurity experts confirmed that attackers had accessed and exfiltrated data as early as February 27, 2024.
After reviewing the affected files, VeriSource confirmed on August 12, 2024, that the breach involved personal data. The company began notifying affected individuals on August 20, 2024, and completed this process by April 17, 2025, in partnership with its client companies.
What Data Did Hackers Steal?
VeriSource reported that the stolen data may include:
- Full names
- Addresses
- Dates of birth
- Gender
- Social Security numbers
Not all individuals had every data point exposed. While VeriSource has not found evidence of misuse, the nature of the information raises the risk of identity theft and fraud.
How Hackers Could Exploit the Stolen Data
Attackers can use the compromised information in several ways:
- Commit Identity Theft: Fraudsters could use Social Security numbers and birth dates to open new accounts or apply for credit.
- Launch Phishing Attacks: With names and addresses, attackers could craft convincing emails posing as HR departments or insurers.
- Access Financial Accounts: If linked to other compromised data, these records could help criminals reset passwords or bypass security questions.
